The recent shooting attack in Alexandria, Virginia against Rep. Scalise and other Republican representatives served as horrifying proof about the danger now posed by radicalized and violent liberal extremists. Instead of condemning the shooter and the liberal groups that stoked his hatred, Republican Congressman Mark Sanford said that President Donald Trump is somehow to blame for the shootings.
Said Rep. Sanford of South Carolina in an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show, “I would argue the president has unleashed, partially, again not in any way totally, but partially to blame for demons that have been unleashed.”
He added, “The fact is you’ve got the top guy saying ‘Well I wish I could hit you in the face and if not, why don’t you and I’ll pay your legal fees,’ that’s bizarre. We ought to call it as such. I was at a town hall meeting — it was at a senior center, at a retirement center — and what took place in terms of what people were saying to each other was like out of a movie, and so we’ve got to find a way to dial this back,”
Continued Rep. Sanford, “They’ll say, ‘If the guy at the top can say anything to anybody at any time, why can’t I?’ I think we all need to look for ways to learn from what happened yesterday.”
Sanford’s loose words earned instant derision. Wrote an internet commenter in response, “You mean the former governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford who disappeared for 6 days then claimed to be hiking in the Appalachian mountains but was at a beach in Argentina with his mistress? The same Mark Sanford who’s wife left the governor’s mansion with the kids because he was caught cheating on her and the legislature started impeachment proceedings against him but opted to only censure him because he was close to the end of his term and term limited. That Mark Sanford?” Do you think that this congressman should be chastised for blaming the shooting on Trump?
