Former The Tonight Show host Jay Leno may not be a conservative, but he is also not a shameless, nasty partisan like the current crop of late night talk show hosts, who try to stay relevant and get high ratings by undermining the presidency of Donald Trump with cheap shots.
Leno recently spoke out against Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and others in interviews with The Hollywood Reporter and Page Six.
Instead of trying to further divide America along political lines, Leno stated, “I enjoy bringing people together.” He criticized the late night hosts on television right now, saying, “If [bashing the president] is a constant thing on a nightly basis, eventually you’re all doing the same joke.”
Said Leno about his own experience telling jokes about sitting presidents while host of The Tonight Show, “I was lucky. I did it at a time when Bush was dumb and Clinton was horny.” He slammed the media’s coverage of President Trump, saying, “But the constant negative Trump stuff on a nightly basis? I think it has a debilitating effect on people. People are just, ‘Oh, gosh, I don’t wanna watch TV anymore. This is just the same thing every night.’”
He added that “this constant pounding” against Trump “does have a tendency to anesthetize your feelings.” Commented Leno about how late-night talk shows are now entirely based around attacking Trump, “It should be called, ‘What Did Trump Do Now?’ That’s basically what everybody’s monologue is. You almost wish for a normal day, just to have a joke.” Are you glad that Jay Leno spoke against Trump-hating late night hosts?
