The report appeared at Your News Wire on December 12, 2017. It quotes Julia Roberts as saying that Melania Trump had been “looked down upon and disrespected by sneering liberals across the country” but she’s “doing a brilliant job.” Then, Roberts supposedly went on to say that Michelle Obama isn’t fit to clean Melania’s toilet.
Within days, the story had been shared thousands of times. But many who read and reacted to the story didn’t scan the “Terms and Conditions” page of Your News Wire. While the website doesn’t clearly identify its content as satire or fake news, it does state that its content “may include inaccuracies” and “makes no representations” about its reliability. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.
What Are Julia Roberts Actual Political Views?
Like many celebrities who don’t want to alienate fans with differing political views, we couldn’t find any instances of Julia Roberts declaring herself a Democrat or a Republican in press coverage.
During a 2015 interview with Allure magazine, however, Julia Roberts voiced support for having a woman president — and guarded support for Hillary Clinton’s candidacy:
“It is a tricky little topic. For me, as a woman in this world with a family and a job¬ that I think she would be ‘a president for women,’ but I think her point of view is critical in this time when we are 51 percent of the population, and somehow the paradigm shift isn’t really happening. I would love to see more of what she has to offer in service to this country.”
So, Julia Roberts is the latest celebrity to be incorrectly identified as a Trump supporter. The same happened to Sandra Bullock. In November, we investigated rumors that Bullock said Hillary Clinton should leave the country if she doesn’t like our president, and we also found that one to be fiction.
